Opening day of the game bird season will be upon us in 18 days,13 hours, 46 minutes and 20 seconds as I write this, not that anyone is counting of course. As the big day approaches thoughts might be turning to what we are going to shoot with this year and whether it is time for an upgrade.
At Hau Ora Clays we recently bought two Beretta silver pigeon over unders which we have been very pleased with. For those not familiar with them, this is the 686, a design which has been in production for donkeys years and seems as popular as ever, a sort of Landrover Defender of guns. Ours are the base cooking models with 28 inch barrels, very plain wood and simple engraving and they have been in near constant use in our customers’ hands since we bought them. They have been fed on an exclusive diet of steel clay loads and have proved completely reliable. They are also relatively light and pointable, making them comfortable to use for those new to shooting. Another plus is that the action is easy to clean and the wood has responded well to a bit of oil.
Niggles? The beads came loose on both of them so, if you buy one, do what we did and apply a dab of loctite to avoid it vanishing to the bottom of the duck pond. Stock oil must also be either very rare or expensive in Italy as ours appear to have had only the briefest acquaintance with the oil bottle. That said, a recent trip to Holland and Holland’s shooting grounds in London revealed their shooting school gun rack comprised several hundred very well used base grade silver pigeons just like ours, so if they are good enough for H&H……….
If you have a new gun you want to try out or just get reacquainted with your existing one before the season there is still time. We are running open sessions at Hau Ora Clays all day Saturday 25th and from 1pm on Sunday 26th April 2015. Call Paul on 021 680053 or email paul@hauoraclays to book a time.
